Contemporary Living In An 1880s Victorian

1327 White St. has strong curb appeal

Thanks to Home & Gardens TV and ubiquitous design magazines, one hears a lot about curb appeal these days. Curb appeal, quite simply, is a building’s exterior attractiveness. The handsome, 3 story Victorian home at 1327 White Street rates high on this metric. Built in 1883, the dignified residence retains its historic lines, including a second story turret and many of the original leaded windows. Lush plantings surround the structure, and a combination of vertical louvered and Bahama shutters shade the interior.

Upon entering the house, the fastidious renovation, which respects and retains the historic integrity of the property, becomes obvious. Throughout, original heart pine wood floors and Dade County Pine walls and ceilings have been preserved and refinished. Gracing the welcoming entrance foyer is a dramatic stained wood and white spindled staircase. The openings leading to the media room and dining room are bracketed by elegant wood columns as well as curved lintels overhead.

Unusual in a house of this period is the open floor plan which allows a free flow among the rooms of the first floor. Adjacent to the foyer is a cozy media room, large enough for a family and friends to gather. A dining room and kitchen opposite are next in line. The state of the art kitchen features a commodious, granite-topped central island with a sink and room for several stools. Below the island, storage space abounds. Stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, generous overhead and under-counter storage and a gas stove create a kitchen suitable for the most demanding chef. A separate pantry features built-in wine storage – perfect for the oenophile in the family.

The great room is just that. Centered in the ceiling is a one-of-a-kind custom wood medallion. Facing the rear patio and pool area, the room is flanked by a laundry room and full bath enhanced by tumbled marble tiles. The large rear patio, reached through sliding glass doors, features a classic kidney-shaped pool and a jacuzzi. A side deck provides space for intimate al fresco dining. Mature plantings provide color and privacy. Period fans throughout the residence provide cooling breezes on warm days.

Three bedrooms, two with ensuite baths, occupy the second floor. While up-to-date, the tiled baths offer both claw-foot tubs and spacious showers. The vanities are period reproductions which maintain the property’s architectural origins. The master bedroom suite fully encompasses the rear section of the second floor. A large walk-in closet and even larger bath complete the suite. All the bedrooms retain the Dade County Pine walls, ceilings and heart pine floors.

The third floor is an open, expansive area which runs the length of the house and can be used as a bedroom, office, play area for children or, in a pinch, an indoor bocce court. There’s a full bath at the street end, exposed lateral beams, under-eaves storage, two dormers for light and openness, and a surprise bonus — a 350 sq. ft tree top deck.

1327 White Street is located near Key West’s Casa Marina neighborhood and close by the NOAA Weather Station, built by folks who must know something about desirable locations. With its 2,862 square feet, high ceilings, and crown molding, the unique property boasts a contemporary open-flow design in an 1880s structure.
