Conch Republic Polar Bear Plunge

Last Sunday, before the crowds packed the bars of Duval Street for the anticlimax that was Super Bowl XLVIII, Key West hosted a much more exciting event -- the 2nd Annual Conch Republic Polar Bear Plunge.

While the usual thought of a Polar Bear Plunge conjures up images like this...

... the Conch Republic Polar Bear Plunge looked like this...

Participants gathered on Higgs Beach on a balmy 82 degree February morning to plunge into the frigid (by local standards!) Atlantic Ocean, where the mid-winter water temperature was a bone-chilling 74 degrees.

This tongue-in-cheek event attracted locals and visitors to participate in the Southernmost Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for a good cause. The $20 entry fee benefited Samuel's House, Inc., a local charity that provides housing and supportive services for homeless women and intact families to aid them in becoming self-sufficient. This year's event more than doubled the number of participants from the 1st annual plunge, and it raised over $6,000 for Samuel's House, Inc.

It was also a fun way to cool off and enjoy the beauty of Higgs Beach on a Sunday afternoon. Thank you to all the participants and to those who donated generously online. If you couldn't make this year's Conch Republic Polar Bear Plunge, be sure to join us in Key West for the 3rd Annual event next year!
