Walking in a Wiener Wonderland

Key West turns into a Wiener Wonderland for the annual Dachshund Walk

Key West is well known for its unique New Year's Eve celebrations, but 12 hours before Sushi the drag queen is lowered in the Big Red Shoe Drop, a different event takes place... the annual Dachshund Walk at noon.

Nearly 200 wiener dogs took to the streets of Old Town Key West for the parade. Short haired, long haired, wire haired, and every color imaginable, they formed "One Canine Family" of eclectic dachshunds. The dogs and their owners gathered in front of the courthouse on Whitehead Street before parading down Fleming Street, Duval Street, and Southard Street. Tails were wagging as dogs and owners greeted each other and costumes were donned in preparation.

There were angels...

 and devils...

and princesses...

and Little Red Riding Hood...

and plenty of frilly dresses!

 There were crustaceans...

and a shark...

 and even an octopus!

There were pirates...

 a Green Bay Packers fan...

The Three Amigos...

and my personal favorite, this dachshund with a delightfully crooked nose wearing a Magic School Bus costume!

They came from near and far to participate in the parade...

There were local dogs, like Parade Marshal Maude,

and this pair of Mardi Gras revelers who travel from New Orleans every year for the event!

Hundreds of people lined the parade route to see the dachshunds. Three Key West mounted police officers led the parade on horseback, followed by a van blaring appropriately themed tunes like Funky Town, Who Let the Dogs Out, and Hound Dog. Then came the wieners...

As with most Key West events, there is a greater purpose here too. A record amount of canned goods and dog food were collected to help needy families and their pets. While the rest of the country shivers in the frigid winter temperatures, Key West's Wiener Wonderland provides a fun, family-friendly event to end the year. If you missed it this time, be sure to join us next year!
